Paxos The Holiday Island For Music Lovers.

Apr 16th, 2010

The tiny Greek island of Paxos, with its groves of olive trees, secluded beaches and coves, and pretty coastal villages, has become a favourite destination for music lovers during its annual jazz and classical music festivals.

In June, the Paxos Jazz Festival attracts talented and well-known musicians from far and wide to perform in open-air, idyllic locations with perfect summer weather. And from 213 September 2006 the renowned Paxos International Music Festival features classical music concerts in Loggos.

Since 1986, this Festival has established a tradition of excellence in performance, and has developed a loyal following of visitors and locals. As well as presenting major works from the chamber music repertoire, the Festival has commissioned new pieces especially for the Island. These included We Shall be Here, for a thousand and a thousand more years, a cantata tracing the history of Paxos from its mythological beginnings to the present day and Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf translated into Greek. Now directed by the UKs Guildhall School of Music and Drama, the 2006 Festival will present major works by composers who have anniversaries this year, including Mozarts Clarinet Quintet; Schumanns Piano Quintet; a Bartok String Quartet and a Shostakovich piano trio. And Guildhall students and teachers will give five special concerts. For the first time in Paxos, singers will present a repertoire of songs and arias.

The cosmopolitan capital of the Island, Gaios, bustles with life at festival time and its harbour is packed with yachts and cruisers. Cafe bars and restaurants line the waterfront, nestled between charming villas with their Venetian architecture, and the island’s nightlife includes late-night music bars overlooking the harbour. At the waterfront terrace of Bar Taxidi, in picture-postcard Loggos, you might even find Spiros, the owner, making traditional music.

Some of the best accommodation on Paxos is to be found in the lovely little fishing harbour of Loggos but, be warned, with limited accommodation Paxos villas are in high demand at the time of the music festival so be sure to make your booking way in advance.

There are cruises that go all over the world. Your choices could take you to Alaska or Venice and everywhere in between. Some factors that might help you in your decision-making are the possible ports you may want to visit, or cities of departure you prefer. You may want to depart from a city close to your home or a city you have always wanted to visit. This will limit your choices of ships embarking from those homeports.

Once you have figured out where you want to go, your next step is to decide what cruise company and ship you prefer. Todays cruise ships are some of the most innovative and advanced ships ever built. Cruise Discounts – Six Ways to Value

Apr 11th, 2010

When planning any vacation, we all want to find the very best value possible. This is no different when planning a cruise vacation. Finding and getting cruise discounts is not that difficult. Not all cruise discounts however will give you the best value.

What is important to you in a vacation cruise is not necessarily what is important to me or anyone else. So the discount you get offered may be for a cruise, cruise line, or stateroom that doesnt interest you. Sure, the price is right but if you get full enjoyment, where is the value? If you are flexible or if you simply want to get-away-from-it-all then any discount will be a good one for you.

We have identified six different ways that cruise discounts are offered. One is sure to be right for you.

Early Booking Discounts

This type of discount is available from most cruise lines and for most itineraries. If you book before a certain date, the cruise line offers a special discount price for your vacation. Now these discounts may not be the best prices you can get but by booking early you will most often get the cruise you want, on the cruise ship you desire, and the itinerary of interest, in the stateroom or suite of your choice. All of these items combined can make this type of vacation discount the very best value for your cruise. You may say that if you wait, with the cruise ships being so large these days, you can get exactly what you want. Be forewarned! Cruises do sell out.

Last Minute Discounts

This is by far the riskiest discount to plan on. If your preferred cruise sells out, youre stuck without that cruise vacation. If you would prefer a balcony stateroom, all that may be available at the time could be inside rooms. However, having said all of that, these discounts can at times provide the very best pricing. So if you are flexible in itinerary, cruise ship, vacation date, and stateroom preference, perhaps this is your best bet.

Group Booking Discounts

If you can generate some interest in your planned cruise vacation with others, you could qualify for a group rate. Not all cruise lines would offer this or any other discount but it is certainly worth pursuing. The rates again may not be as low as for a last minute cruise discount but you can get in early enough to ensure that you get the preferences listed above.

Low Season Discounts

Should your vacation schedule fall into one of the low seasons for cruise vacations, you would be in luck. In the Caribbean for example, the so-called Hurricane season provides many great cruise rates for potential passengers. Now I know that summer season is a better name for it from a marketing standpoint but we may as well call it like it is. Keep in mind that on a cruise, should a major storm happen, cruise ships can divert to calmer waters. Todays cruise ships can out-run storms as well. If you were to be in a resort on a land-based vacation, you would have no choice but to flee or take cover.

Value Added Cruise Pricing

This type of discount does not change the price of the cruise itself. It does however give guests specials additions and perks. One such added value could be stateroom upgrades you pay for a certain category of stateroom and the cruise line automatically bumps you up into the next category. Another common value-added feature is an on-board credit. In this case, the cruise line adds a credit to your stateroom account that can be used while on your vacation. Other perks can include free logo-wear or a bottle of wine in your stateroom.

Previous Cruisers Discounts

For first-time cruisers, this type of discount will be un-attainable. But next cruise on the same cruise line, you may be offered many different specials that you may find attractive. These could include free upgrades and on-board credits as detailed above.

Whether you take advantage of any of the possible discounts available for cruise vacations, one thing is certain. A cruise aboard one of the magnificent cruise ships will be an experience to cherish!

An Introduction To Bermuda Cruises

Apr 11th, 2010

If you are planning a cruise to Bermuda, there are certain important things which you must keep in mind. If you have not been to Bermuda before, bear in mind that it is not a big island. In fact, it doesn’t take more than 24 hours to walk across the whole island.

Bermuda is around 120 miles north of the Caribbean Sea. It has a mild climate even during the winter months. Cruises to Bermuda are generally available between April and late October. There are certain cruises which keep on making trips until the end of December. However, they are relatively rare.

Your cruise ship could land in any one of the three ports at Bermuda, though it is most likely that you would stop in the port of Hamilton, as it has two shipping berths. It may happen that you visit more than one port on your Bermuda cruise trip.

The other port is known as St. George port. It is a historical port and attracts large numbers of tourists. Then there is the third port, at King’s Wharf. This port has museums, galleries and popular restaurants, which makes it a famous cultural hub. Bermuda cruises often have a large number of tourists who often make return visits to Bermuda. This indicates the islands popularity.

However, as it is a small island, restrictions are in place concerning the maximum number of cruise liners that can land here. Check out the limit before you book a Bermuda cruise. The bookings can be done online or over the telephone. There are many cruise liners to choose from. Your choice of a cruise liner depends on your budget and the kind of vacation you are looking to take. There are luxury liners for those who want to splurge, and cheaper liners for those on a tighter budget.

On Oregon’s Coast: Lewis & Clark and the Holidays

Apr 9th, 2010

Sometimes, the best holiday celebrations aren’t the most famous or obvious ones.

This is especially true on Oregon’s coast, where one big secret is that this time of year doesn’t just mean the area’s notoriously stormy and wild weather, but that it has many days that are unusually dry and warm compared to the rest of the state. But the most delightful secrets lie in the realm of holiday celebrations, which make for some memorable discoveries along this famously pristine stretch of shoreline.

On the northern Oregon coast, the holidays begin not with the usual celebrations, but with a major wine event and loads of signature Lewis & Clark commemorations.

On November 7, it will have been exactly two hundred years since William Clark wrote “Ocian in view! O! the Joy!” as he spotted what he thought was the Pacific Ocean (it was actually a big bay just before the ocean). For the next five months, staring in 1805, the Corps of Discovery spent their time in this part of the Northwest. The Lewis & Clark Bicentennial marks this, and things kick off at Fort Stevens (between Seaside and Astoria) on November 11, with the “Opening Ceremony – Lewis & Clark Veteran’s Day Commemoration.” Oregonian and former Miss America, Katie Harmon (2002), will sing the national anthem, and the event will feature banners from local tribes and other remembrances of the Corps of Discovery.

November 14 brings the Dedication Of The Fort To Sea Trail at Fort Ctatsop (near Fort Stevens), marking the trail from the crew’s winter quarters to their time on the beaches of Seaside.

Fort Clatsop – the replica of the Corps’ winter camp – will feature various “Wintering Over Events” between the Fort and Cannon Beach. This replica tragically burned in early October, but the visitor center there is still the center of many of the winter events, including a living history program about their Christmas at the camp on December 25. On January 7, the celebration comes to Cannon Beach (some 25 miles south), marking the day that Clark, Sacegawea and others traveled to the ocean to see a beached whale.

The adorable resort town of Seaside – which boasts broad, immaculate beaches, the “million dollar walk” of Broadway Ave., and a cove famous for surfing – will be one of the few cities to host a major traveling exhibit on Lewis & Clark. From November 19 to November 22, you’ll find the “Corps of Discovery II, 200 yrs. To The Future,” with a mobile 250-seat auditorium showing multimedia programs on Lewis & Clark’s troupe of travelers. Free. 503-861-4403. www.destinationthepacific.com.

Also on November 19, Seaside will abound with the bounty of the vineyard with the holiday-themed Seaside Downtown Wine Walk. The now-annual event features hundreds of folks wandering throughout the downtown area and taste-testing Northwest wines. $5 for the wristband. 503-717-1914 or www.seasidedowntown.com.

By late November, Seaside really gets lit up with the “Yuletide at Seaside,” where the entire town is decked out in all sorts of light configurations. Highlights include the Holiday Gift Fair on November 25 – 27 at the Seaside Civic & Convention Center, the famous Holiday Caroling & Lighted Float Parade on November 26, the Holiday Lights Tour aboard a bus on December 10 and 11, and the Seaside Children’s Christmas Party at the Seaside Convention Center on December 11. Call 800-394-3303 for more information on all these, or go to www.seasideor.com.

If you want to stay in a castle on Oregon’s coast and enjoy some special holiday events, you need only look about 15 miles south of Seaside to St. Bernard’s Bed & Breakfast. This stunning beauty is built to look somewhere between a medieval structure and a Swiss ski lodge, filled with antique furniture and a spicy sense of romance and adventure – in an exceptionally upscale way.

Every morning means gourmet breakfasts made by the able hand of owner Barbara Dau. Thanksgiving means Dau’s talents will create a special traditional dinner with her artistic flair. It’s open to in-house guests only, and cost is $65, including fine wines as well. The highlight here, aside from the food and wondrous surroundings, is the engaging, convivial atmosphere created by gathering to dine with others you haven’t met before. This, and St. Bernard’s special New Year’s Eve traditions, are becoming an increasingly popular addiction for Oregon and Washington residents.

On New Year’s Eve, Dau puts together a six-course gourmet bash, which features dishes from around the world and matching wines for each. It’s a culinary and wine-tasting trip across the globe. It all ends with champagne by a beach bonfire that is breathtaking every year. www.st-bernards.com. 800-436-2848.

In Newport – the town with two lighthouses – the ancient Bayfront gets gussied up in an incredible array of lights. Nearby, the historic Nye Beach district (known as the “Honeymoon Capitol of the World” for various reasons) has an antique charm that’s somewhere between old Europe and turn-of-the-century America with its tiny cobblestone streets.

For those who want to celebrate with more than a little finery, the stunning bistro-style eatery Village Market & Deli goes into overdrive with its legendary cuisine, offering special holiday dishes to its partial ocean view, sometimes to the shimmering sounds of guest musicians. This pleasure, and the owners’ sister business, Blu Cork Wine Bar, are one of Newport’s hush-hush holiday knockouts. Blu Cork will feature a stunning sourdough bread pudding and chocolate cake for the season that contains a multitude of taste layers, as well as specialty holiday meats, spreads, terrines, pates and champagne – all surrounded by its famous wine-themed dcor and selection of memorable northwest wines. (541-574-9393 for Village Market & Deli).

All About Cruise Ships

Apr 7th, 2010

Cruise ships are rated on a 100 point scale. They need to maintain a health score higher than 86 out of 100. Cruise ships are a great location to have your next vacation. If given the opportunity, many parents would choose to take a cruise alone. Cruise ships are very safe as well. They are equipped with life boats, life jackets, emergency personnel, doctors, and firemen all on the cruise ship.

Cruise ships are like floating resorts with all the choices fine resorts have to offer. You can be by yourself and lie back in a lounge chair, breathe in the sea air, soak up the sun, read good books, or watch the ever-changing view. Cruise ships are required to follow strict environmental regulations that ensure that treated sewage and wastewater from showers, sinks and kitchen galleys are discharged properly at designated offshore perimeters. In fact, cruise line waste management is so highly regarded that cruise lines are often consulted by state governments on pollution abatement and sewage control. Cruise ships are like floating resorts with all the amenities fine resorts have to offer.

Passengers are invariably assigned to lifeboats or similar survival craft. The total capacity of all the survival craft on board will exceed the total number of persons on the vessel. Passengers become friends; they are never just cabin numbers. Unlike other larger ships, they are proud of the intimate world they offer, where modern-day conveniences sail in harmony with traditional values.

Statistically, cruise ships are safer than hotels and resorts when it comes to fires and violent crime. However, it is in your best interest not to abandon common sense just because you board a cruise ship for a wonderful vacation. Staterooms will receive upgraded soft goods, Shear Butter bathroom amenities from L’Occitane, flat screen TVs and DVD/CD players, and Bose Sound Docks for use with iPods, which can be borrowed at no charge from reception. Wireless connectivity in public areas is promised for all three ships.

Staterooms on many ships are even equipped with televisions. While most ships now have telephones in passenger cabins, you can also call someone on shore through the ship’s radio operator while at sea. Staterooms on all of today’s modern cruise ships are equipped with satellite televisions and in some cases in-cabin internet connections. And, you can make phone calls from most ports.

Everything you’ve heard about cruise ship dining is true. At each meal, you’ll find a varied selection of appetizers, salads, soups, main courses and desserts. Everything you’ve heard about cruise ship dining is true. At each meal, you’ll find a varied selection of entrees (appetizers, salads, soups, vegetables, and desserts, too), and each day the selection will be different.

On a cruise you dont drive anywhere for 7, 10, 14 days or even more. Even if you were on a bus tour with someone else doing the driving , you haul around your suitcases and repack it all at each new destination. On a cruise, you check your luggage when you check in and it automatically appears in your cabin, stateroom, or suite. You’re at home and don’t have to pack for the duration of the cruise. And the food is legendary! Each ship has many restuarants staffed by world-class chefs, and the cost of the food is included in the cost of the cruise. At every port, guided tours are available so you won’t miss any of the local attractions. You won’t have to mind your children constantly, either. Supervised activities like water skiing are available to keep them occupied. And at the end of your holidy staff will retrieve your luggage and place it on shore at the intended pick-up point. Taking a cruise vacation frees you from so many of the worries associated with traveling, and leaves you with even more time to relax and enjoy your destination.

Celebrity Cruise Lines offers the most competitive deals in the travel industry. Conde Nast Traveler consistently rates Celebrity Cruises as one of the world’s best cruise ship lines. Services include informative lectures about your location, upscale boutiques, and Las Vegas style entertainment created for Celebrity by Cirque du Soleil. Try your luck in the Casino or even collect fine art at an onboad auction. Enjoy exotic nightlife at The Bar At The Edge of the Earth.

There’s an overdose of pampering awaiting you at the world-famous Aqua-Spa by Elemis. Try a deluxe manicure, a luxurious facial or even a relaxing massage. Celebrity offers acupuncture by a licensed acupuncturist and Chinese medicine as well. You’ll feel renewed and invigorated.

But Celebrity isn’t just for the grown-ups. Kids feel right at home on these cruises. The Celebrity X-Club Youth Program has age-specific activities and entertainment for each age group. Science and nature exploration, talent shows, treasure hunts, children’s dinner parties, slumber parties and a lot more are all arranged by professional staff. Favorite areas of the ship are set aside for the younger seafaring set only, like the Shipmates Fun Factory, teen center and pools. When the ship is docked, adults have the option of going on cultural tours by themselves without bored children tagging along. And the children can enjoy vigorous, noisy activities without wearing out the parents. What a relief for both generations!

Age or disability do not hamper cruising. Ships are designed for mobility-impaired passengers, and staff is always ready to help with passengers’ medical needs. Celebrity Cruise Lines accommodates those who want dialysis or supplemental oxygen, and more medical services can be arranged if requested beforehand. Emergency care is always available on board, saving you the trouble of finding a doctor who speaks your language in a foreign country.

Dinner is a vital event in itself on a cruise ship, a tradition dating back to the late 1800s when cruises were for royalty and the wealthy who expected elegant formal dinners. Again, in todays lifestyle the elegant dinner is optional, and for those who like to dine casually, food is available around the clock from cafeterias and room service . All the same, for those who like a ritzy event where they can show off their best attire and jewelry, there are optional formal dinners where ladies put on long formal evening dresses and gentlemen have on tuxedos.

And don’t forget the cruise destination itself! Celebrity Cruises dock at a different port of call every few days, depending upon distances and sailing time between points of interest. You are able to stay aboard the ship all day or go ashore. You are free to investigate each destination on your itinerary as long as you return to the ship in time for departure.

Optional activities are offered for a slight extra cost, and Celebrity offers adventures geared toward the unique features of every destination. As an illustration, Caribbean cruises offer snorkeling, diving or even beach excursions while Alaskan cruises offer helicopter tours or even sea kayaking. For the less adventuresome, normally there are bus tours or supervised shopping excursions in the local port. Each and every detail, including meals, is prearranged. All you have to do is line up at the correct spot onshore and an let anexperienced tour guide look after everything else.

With all these unique and wonderful services available at such a reasonable price, why not think about a Celebrity Cruise for your next vacation?

Adventures You Could Think Of Undertaking In Greece

Apr 6th, 2010

Greece is a land of mysteries, mythologies, tales of mans ancient past and the immense developments it has garnered over the last three millenniums. It is known for having had a thriving economy, magnificent beaches, some truly world class Greek hotels and an unparalleled hospitality to offer, since graduating to be a modern European state. Travelers flock its landscape, as a result, to listen to its 3000 years old account and be a witness of its past glory. However, there are many other activities apart from visiting the archaeological sites that one should consider undertaking while being in Greece. We are going to discuss some of these outdoor activities, during the course of next few paragraphs.

Camping, hiking and trekking across scenic islands like Mykonos, Santorini, Tinos and Naxos is a popular activity in Greece these days. Vans and mini buses are pressed into service to ferry up people to rocky mountains where they are able to climb up steep slopes under watchful eyes. Such 7 to 14 day long camps can cost anything from $ 1000 to $2500 per candidate.

As an alternative, one should try undertaking a yacht journeys that will sail through scenic Greek islands. These trips may last up to three weeks and may cover many historic towns and scenic spots as they move from one to another tourist destination. There are several routes that one could choose to have their vacations planned. Greek hotels, in conjunction with major tour operators, will offer to arrange such yacht journeys for you. Travelers can take part in hiking, snorkeling, and carry on doing similar other stuff while being part of such tours. Exploration of various heritage sites and visiting taverna-lined harbors will also be part of your fun and relaxation!

Cycling and biking across Greek mountains and countryside is yet another way of enhancing ones experience of holidaying. However, no significant help may be garnered either from Greek hotels or tour operators in this case, and one should try looking out for online resources instead. Some biking and cycling enthusiasts will extend guidance and logistic support, to help you carry out your biking expeditions. They will lead you into areas deep inside the Greek countryside and will help you bike through some very unorthodox routes. You will be able to have a close look at Greek countryside as you move on.

Visiting Greeces archaeological sites is a key way of vacationing in Europe. However, it could be further enhanced by undertaking additional outdoor activities like biking, camping and sailing through various Greek islands. There can not be a better way than spending more time in the Greek countryside to get to know more about its culture heritage and life. Greek tourism has taken a good note of this aspect and accordingly worked out plans to provide you with several additional outdoor activities apart from extending an access to world-class Greek hotels and beaches.
